OUR METHODOLOGY & TECHNIQUES

Wide-Ranging Capability

At GSS Piling, we provide a well-rounded service, encompassing everything from efficient piling installation methods to a complete design and build option.

Methodology

Optimised Piling Methodology

We aim to provide an optimal pile installation methodology, selecting the most suitable rig and technique for the ground conditions and site access constraints.

Similarly, pile diameter and depth can be optimised by our in-house design team who can also interrogate structural and construction sequencing to ensure for cost and programme efficiencies.

Methodology

Multiple Modes & Techniques

Our piling rigs work in multiple modes, allowing us to deploy a variety of piling methods: Continuous Flight Auger (CFA), Sectional Flight Auger (SFA), Dry Bored Rotary Piles, segmentally cased piles and piles under drilling fluid.

Our selected pile installation methodology may involve the construction of single bearing piles, pile groups or retaining walls.

1. Rotary bored piling

Rotary bored piling suits both granular and cohesive soils. Temporary casings support unstable and water-bearing ground, and the technique can bore through obstructions such as buried concrete, existing piles or natural rock. We bore to 70 metres at diameters from 450 mm to 2300 mm.

2. Continuous flight auger (CFA / CSP)

CFA is our most cost- and time-efficient piling technique. Piles are drilled using a single continuous hollow-stem auger, with concrete pumped through the stem as the auger is withdrawn and the cage plunged afterwards. Quiet and vibration-free, with bored lengths to 37 metres and diameters from 350 mm to 1200 mm.

3. Segmental flight auger (SFA)

This technique is commonly used to install piles in unstable soils where access is limited and only a mini piling rig can be deployed. It is similar to the CFA technique with the difference that the auger is added segmentally to the required depth.

4. Segmental rotary bored

This technique utilises the principles of rotary bored piles using restricted access mini piling rigs. Segmental casings and augers are installed in 1m lengths to enable piles to be formed in restricted access and low headroom conditions.

Bearing Piles & Retaining Walls

Bearing piles

Bearing piles are used to transfer structural loads into the ground to a suitable soil stratum and to limit structural movements.

See Camden Goods Yard

Retaining walls

Embedded walls are used to support the ground around excavations in both temporary and permanent conditions.

We offer a variety of retaining wall types including contiguous walls, secant walls (hard-soft, hard-firm and hard-hard) and kingpost walls, using both our restricted access and large diameter piling rigs.

Typical uses

We work extensively across a wide range of sectors. Common applications include residential, high rise, retrofit basements, shafts, data centres and transportation infrastructure such as bridge abutments and tunnel walls.  We have an extensive portfolio of projects, both large and small.

All of our rigs can install contiguous and secant pile walls meaning we are able to assist no matter the access constraints.

Rotary bored piling

Rotary bored piling is commonly used in both granular and cohesive soils. Temporary casings can be used to support unstable and water bearing soils. This technique can be used to bore through obstructions, such as buried concrete, existing piles or natural rock

Continuous flight auger (CFA / CSP)

CFA techniques are cost and time efficient. Commonly, this technique involves drilling piles using a hollow stemmed single length of “continuous” flighted auger.

As the auger is rotated out of the ground, concrete is pumped to replace the material excavated via the hollow stem of the auger, and a reinforcement cage is then plunged into the concrete. The boring head on the auger can be modified to suit a range of soil and rock conditions.

Segmental flight auger (SFA)

This technique is commonly used to install piles in unstable soils where access is limited and only a mini piling rig can be deployed. It is similar to the CFA technique with the difference that the auger is added segmentally to the required depth.

Segmental rotary bored

Bored temporary cased

This technique utilises the principles of rotary bored piles using restricted access mini piling rigs. Segmental casings and augers are installed in 1m lengths to enable piles to be formed in restricted access and low headroom conditions.

At Camden Goods Yard, working alongside MCL, the full versatility of the piling fleet was demonstrated. Rotary piles to 50m, CFA piles to 30m and mini bored temporary cased piles to 35m were all delivered to ensure a coherent, value-engineered solution.
