The iconic former Rowntree’s factory’s transformation into a new community was the focus of this project. Piles needed to be installed within the existing structure to carry additional loading resulting from redevelopment and extension.
We selected 450 mm diameter SFA piles to provide high load capacity given the site’s constraints. Our Klemm 708 piling rig enabled us to maximise the possible depths while working in restricted headroom.
Prior to the main works, trial piles were undertaken to verify the ground conditions and demonstrate the ability to limit flighting while drilling various density strata.
The high torque coupled with the high crowd of the Klemm 708 rig enabled the piles to be drilled through both granular and cohesive soils and sockets into the underlying sandstone without compromising the existing foundations which had been formed on shallow pad foundations. Detailed analysis was undertaken to minimise the differential movement between the new and existing foundations.
Piles within the existing basement were drilled from ground floor level via a bored temporary cased SFA technique, where temporary casing was installed from ground to basement level. This avoided complicated temporary works for rig access, saving both time and cost.
